Spa - Both Grubmuller and Charouz scored points in the first race of the weekend
The third race of the World Series by Renault 3.5 brought for the first time points for booth rookie drivers of the P1 Motorsport team. Walter Grubmuller Jr. finished eighth at Spa Francorchamps and got three points while Jan Charouz scored his first two points thanks to ninth place.
Jan Charouz did reasonably well already in the morning's qualifying. The Czech driver was just six tenths off the fastest qualifier which secured him seventh place on the grid. Jan was also fourth best rookie in the championship. Also second driver of the P1 Motorsport team Walter Grubmuller Jr. did well among the rookies, where he was sixth. However, overall it was good enough only for 14th place on the grid.
Once again the bad weather forecast did not materialize today and the whole day running was in the dry. Jan Charouz did not have an ideal start and the Czech driver lost several positions. He needed just the first lap to move several positions up to eighth and was seventh after lap four. Charouz led a group of drivers during following laps and managed to close the gap to sixth Costa. Walter Grubmuller jun. held 12th spot.
Both P1 Motorsport drivers moved one place up when second place man Brandon Hartley retired on lap 17 from 22. However, Jan Charouz made a small mistake next lap and dropped behind his teammate. Grubmuller was ninth and Charouz just behind 10th. Both held positions until the checquered flag. However, both moved one place up afterwards when the Briton Lancaster got 10 seconds penalty and dropped from fifth place behind both P1 Motorsport drivers. Walter and Jan scored third and fourth places in the rookies. The Austrian driver managed to score points in all races while the Czech got first points to his name in the championship.
Jan Charouz, P1 Motorsport driver: "We were again a bit unlucky in the qualifying. I think there were four red flags when I wanted to put in a quick lap. I lost advantage of the new tyres as a result, so I set my best time on used rubber. It could have been better otherwise.
My start was not a great one and I lost two positions but fortunately I managed to get them back immediately during the first lap. It was looking good afterwards. I tried to attack one rival close to the end and it did not work out. I spun ad lost positions. I feel bad about it now. I will try to do better tomorrow."
Walter Grubmuller Jr., P1 Motorsport driver: "I made a good start and gained two places but lost them quite quickly. The important point was to keep the pace of drivers in front of me. It gave me opportunities to try several overtaking manoeuvres. In the end I finished eighth. It is a good result and more points for me."
The World Series by Renault 3.5 continues tomorrow with fourth race of the season again in Spa Francorchamps. The length of the race will be same like today (44 minutes + 1 lap). However, there is a difference, all drivers has to do one mandatory pitstop between laps 5-13 with change of minimum two wheels.
Sunday's race will be also broadcasted live on Eurosport. The live coverage starts at 2 pm on Eurosport 2.
