Spa - Charouz and Grubmuller again among fastest rookies in free practices
Forcasted rain fortunately did not hit Spa-Francorchamps track during Friday's free practices. The Formula Renault 3.5 single-seaters enjoyed dry track for the running. P1 Motorsport drivers did well especially in the morning when both were in the top 10 and also were among the fastest five rookies. The Czech driver and his Austrian team-mate were in the top five rookies also in the afternoon.
The Belgian Spa-Francorchamps circuit currently hosts the second round of the World Series by Renault 2010 and it is one of the most popular between drivers thanks to its natural character while it is also a stern test of their driving abilities. The track in the Arden is infamous for its changeable conditions and forecasts predicts rain shower during the course of the whole weekend. However, the rain did not cause troubles on Friday. There were jusr some drops but both practice of the Formula Renault 3.5 took place mainly in the dry.
The drivers of the British P1 Motorsport team again proved that they are able to mix with more experienced competitors in the front, which is the aim, even though both are rookies in the series. The target is to be in the top 10. Walter Grubmueller jun. Lost just 0,770s behind the fastest time and was fourth overall and third best rookie. Jan Charouz was 0,959s adrift which brought seventh overall and fifth in the rookies.
Both drivers were attacking the top 10 also in the afternoon although they finished just outside but they were again in the top five rookies. However, the lap times were not priority on Friday, the focus was on tuning of the setup for the Saturday's qualifying and race.
Jan Charouz, P1 Motorsport driver: "We will see how it would look tomorrow and on Sunday because the forecast is not good but today we had reasonable weather. There were some drops of rain but the track dried quickly. The first session was quite okay from my point of view although I was loosing time in the middle sector. I managed to improve there in the afternoon but there were yellow flags in the last sector during my best lap. I had to lift off which cost me about three tenths. If it had not happened I would have been again in the top 10. It is a great experience to drive Formula Renault 3.5 here at Spa. I am reasonably happy with today but the important parts will be tomorrow and on Sunday."
Both races are broadcasted live on Eurosport channel. The live coverage of race 1 starts at 2 pm on Saturday on Eurosport2, race 2 starts also at 2pm on Sunday on the same channel.
