FAIRUZ NETS NINTH PLACE IN QUALIFYING
Monza, Italy -- April 14, 2007. In a thrilling qualifying session Malaysian Fairuz Fauzy secured a ninth place starting slot for the opening round of the World Series by Renault at Monza.
Because of the huge grid of 30 cars for the World Series event, the qualifying session was split into two separate groups. Fairuz was in Group B and with just five minutes of the session remaining he muscled his way into the fourth quickest position.
But the Cram Competition driver was unfortunate not to improve even faster as the session was stopped because of a crash involving Jaap van Lagen (Comtec). Qualifying was restarted with just a minute remaining and Fairuz lost fourth place to Betrand Baguettte (KTR) in the dying seconds.
With the two groups added together, the Malaysian starts the first race on Saturday afternoon in ninth place. Fairuz has been in stellar form during the whole weekend of the opening World Series by Renault event at Monza. The Cram ace was fastest overall during the morning collective test session on Thursday after just 35 laps. It proves he has the pace to convert a ninth place starting slot into a decent result.
He said: "It was a shame that I lost fourth place in my session in the last moments of qualifying as it means we start ninth overall -- but otherwise it was a good result. The most important thing now is to focus on the race and stay out of trouble on the opening lap. Finishing this race and getting a good grid position for the second race on Sunday is vital. I can't wait to get racing."
