PRE-SEASON HOMEWORK FOR JAMES WALKER
Oxford, UK - 16 March 2007: James Walker was out on track in Barcelona this week for the first official World Series by Renault test of 2007. There is a lot of work to do during pre-season testing as James is a rookie World Series driver and the Fortec team are also new to the championship. With this in mind, work has now begun to get everything right for the start of the season in just four weeks time.
The first day of the test (Wednesday) at the Circuit de Catalunya was spent gathering data on the car and the circuit itself. As well as working out exactly where they are at with the car this gives the team the opportunity to get information on the track which will be vital when they race there later this year. James also had to learn the circuit as he has not driven there before and indeed hasn't driven a racing car since the end of last year. He knows the track now though, some 200 laps and almost 1000kms later!
The team made very few changes to the car before bolting on the first set of new rubber at the end of day one. With a lap time that put him 11th out of 32 in the afternoon times, James was happy with the first day of testing.
On day two the team had more new tyres at their disposal and set about working on various set-ups to get the most out of the car. As well as learning a lot about his new car James is learning to work with his new race engineer, Chris Gorne.
"It has been really good to start working with Chris," said James. "We now know what we expect from one another and it has all been very positive. It's always hard to judge what is going on with the other teams during a test but we were regularly in the top 10 throughout the two days. We are up against a lot of second-year World Series drivers so I'm pleased with where we are at this moment in time."
James' next test is at the Nurburgring in two weeks time (27/28 March).
