Chris van der Drift makes race debut in World Series by Renault
Barcelona, 16 April 2009 -- Chris van der Drift is set to make his race debut in the ultra competitive World Series by Renault in Barcelona this weekend. The 23 year old Kiwi has been invited by the Spanish race team Epsilon Euskadi to compete for them after several test sessions for the team earlier this year. For the 2008 International Formula Master champion this means yet another step higher on the motorsport ladder and a new challenge to achieve a high ranking in this class.
"I am extremely happy that the team has given me this chance to race. Due to the financial crisis it is extremely difficult to find an adequate race budget", said Van der Drift. "The tests in Valencia, Jerez, and Barcelona were also based on an invite from the team, so it would seem that they were impressed enough to give me a chance. I had a good relationship with the team during testing, so I am looking forward to the first race weekend. I will still need to get to know the car better, and of course pitstops are also new for me. In any event I will be doing the best I can!"
After a convincing title win in the International Formula Master championship last year, with ten podiums, six of which were race wins, and seven pole positions (of eight) with eight fastest race laps, the New Zealander has not been sitting idle over the European winter. In his race debut in the GP2 Asia Series he scored more points in that weekend than both his predecessors scored in the entire previous season with the same team, he tested the 2009 specification International Formula Master car on invitation from the IFM organisation, and also competed for A1 Team.NZL in de A1GP World Cup of Motorsport. After various successful tests in the 425Hp World Series by Renault car, Epsilon Euskadi has rewarded the talented driver with a race-seat for the first race weekend of the new season.
