Times tumble in free practice one as Stoneman leads a British 1-2-3
Dean Stoneman kicked off his Zolder weekend in impressive style by setting the quickest time in free practice one this morning.
At one stage Stoneman held an advantage of just 0.001s over compatriot Jolyon Palmer, before he went on to lower the benchmark on two further occasions. Palmer also improved late on to consolidate second position, but he was unable to match the 1:23.840s lap time set by his championship rival.
It was a stunning pace set by the lead duo as they were only a tenth of a second slower than Philipp Eng's fastest lap time from Tuesday's test, which was set during an overboost enabled session.
Incredibly third position through to tenth were separated by less than two tenths of a second, and it was Jack Clarke who pipped Nicola De Marco by just 0.017s to complete an all British top three. Sergey Afanasiev set his quickest lap in the final seconds to claim fifth ahead of Will Bratt and Armaan Ebrahim respectively.
Home driver Benjamin Bailly enjoyed another solid session to claim eighth while Kazim Vasiliauskas and Mihai Marinescu rounded out the top ten. Paul Rees narrowly missed out on a top ten finish and he also endured a spin at the Kleine Chicane in the closing moments.
Parthiva Sureshwaren ran well in 12th, while Silverstone and Marrakech race winner Philipp Eng could only manage 13th. Ricardo Teixeira experienced a wild moment at turn one when he spun into the gravel midway through the 30 minute session.
The F2 cars will be back on track at 1pm (local time) for the final free practice session, ahead of the opening session which commences at 4:45pm.
