Jos Verstappen took victory in the Minardi two-seater race at the Thunder at the Rock yesterday, with singer Jay Kay as his passenger. The ten lap race at the Rockingham Motor Speedway featured eight F1x2 Minardi cars; test driver Gianmaria Bruni, who's passenger was Justin Hawkins, lead singer of rock band The Darkness, and Patrick Friesacher, who took along footballer Teddy Sheringham, were second and third.

"I must say, that was a great experience," said Verstappen. "I still can't believe how close the two-seater is to the European Minardi Formula One car. I drove one of the F1 cars in pit-stop demonstrations with Paul Stoddart during the weekend and found the two-seater only a few seconds slower. It was great to take the chequered flag today and to hear the Dutch national anthem played on the podium. I only wish it had been a real Grand Prix !"

Minardi boss Paul Stoddart also drove in the race, finishing sixth, was very pleased with the success of the whole weekend. "Despite the threatening rain clouds, the European Minardi F1 Team put on what can only be described as an awesome display of F1 two-seater action at the magnificent Rockingham facility," he said.

"Having given 101 passengers in the course of the last three days the experience of a lifetime, it was really pleasing to see that, in the race, six out of eight cars took the chequered flag. All our drivers have done a fantastic job, not only in chauffeuring the passengers, but also in giving freely of their time to meet Formula One fans and to sign autographs."

"Many people ask why we don't stage events like this more often, but the logistics involved in setting up what is effectively half of a Grand Prix grid is not something we take lightly. With over 150 staff required to make this happen, sadly, we can only do this once a year."

"My sincere thanks to the European Minardi teams in England and Italy, and to the volunteers who have helped us out this weekend. Without their support, we simply wouldn't be able to stage events like this."
