Verstappen seeks answers after Monaco GP troubles

Max Verstappen says he and his Red Bull team must sit down and analyse what exactly went wrong at the Monaco Grand Prix after a difficult weekend.

The Dutchman hit double trouble on the streets of Monte Carlo, crashing out of Q1 after making a mistake at the Swimming Pool and then spearing into the barriers at Massenet in the race.

It was Verstappen's most disappointing outing of the season, and was in stark contrast to the brilliance he showed in Spain when he took his maiden victory for the Red Bull.

Speaking in a Red Bull video about what lessons he took out of the Monaco weekend, Verstappen said: "I learned a lot of things – to stay out of the wall first of all.

"Now, it is to analyse how and what went wrong and why we got into this situation. It is all part of the learning curve and again getting more experience."

Coming together

Despite starting from the pitlane as the result of his qualifying crash, Verstappen thinks things had been looking pretty positive prior to the error that put him out.

"I think the beginning of the race was very good, we showed great pace – sometimes the fastest lap around – and I think it was all coming together very well," he said.

"We got back into the points and then unfortunately, when we fitted the soft tyres, I made a mistake and hit the wall. That is not how you want to end the weekend, especially when your team does a great job to rebuild the car after qualifying. They deserved much more."

New engine

Verstappen also confirmed that he will get Renault's upgraded engine for Montreal, with teammate Daniel Ricciardo having been given it for Monaco.

"I'm finally getting the new engine so definitely looking forward to that as well," he said. "You have more horsepower and better driveability so all in all it will give you some laptime."
