BAR is facing some troubles at Magny-Cours today (Friday) after the team's cars were impounded by French police and a bailiff on orders from the courts. The situation is a continuance from Monaco, where production company PPGI issued an injunction in regard to monies owing from a sponsorship deal some five years ago.

At that time nothing happened, although a hearing date was set for the end of June. BAR initially dismissed the claim as unsubstantial but the problem has arisen again.

The BAR cars have been secured in the transporters and the Bridgestone tyres, normally stacked outside the garages, have apparently been returned to the manufacturer.

BAR is understood to be seeking legal advice and a court ruling as to whether the team can take part in the French GP is due to be delivered tomorrow.

"We've seized some equipment and impounded the cars," a police spokesman told Reuters. "We don't exactly know the legal problem but a court will rule on the case in emergency (session) tomorrow (Friday) and decide whether the cars are allowed to race or not."
