The persistent rumours linking Ralf Schumacher and Toyota are continuing apace, but the German based team denied a deal has been signed. Reports in the German press last week claimed Schumacher had already signed with Toyota in a three-year deal worth ?15 million for the first season.

"We are talking to various drivers and one of them is Ralf, we don't deny this," said Toyota spokesman Andrea Ficarelli, according to Reuters. "But reports that we have signed him are absolutely not true."

Schumacher's contract with Williams runs out at the end of this season but despite reports to the contrary, he and manager Willi Weber say staying with Williams is the preferred option.

Weber was quoted as saying he had been in talks with Renault and Toyota, then claimed he had spoken to neither of them. With Toyota confirming it has indeed been speaking to Ralf, it seems Weber needs to get his contradictions sorted out.

Williams is balking at Schumacher's salary demands and paddock talk indicates that a move to Toyota is the most likely option for the German. Williams could well be looking for two race drivers next year, seats that will be hard fought for.
