Mika Salo has said that Toyota had a breakdown in communications about the weather conditions in qualifying and this could have cost the chance for a higher grid position. Salo qualified 14th in very wet conditions on Saturday and was disappointed as he was sure he could have been inside the top ten.
"We screwed up, the team knew it was going to rain and the information came to the pitwall but it did not come to the car, so we made a mistake," he said. "My first flying lap was very careful because I didn't want to put it into the gravel and I needed to qualify the car. It's difficult to say where we could have qualified because I am sure everyone else would have gone quicker if it hadn't rained but we would have gone faster for sure.
The Finn showed amazing speed in free practice on Friday, although he did admit he was running a very low fuel load. Despite their unfortunate qualifying performance, both Toyota drivers showed well in warm-up this morning with Allan McNish ending up 12th and Salo 16th, misleading figures as they were generally faster than the final results imply.
