BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen believes the reduction of in-season testing will be a big help towards cutting costs and he hopes that Ferrari will eventually agree. Ferrari has so far not joined the nine other teams in the deal to cut testing but Theissen urges the Scuderia to do so. He thinks that reducing testing will save money on engines for a start.

"I certainly hope they (Ferrari) will join because it absolutely makes sense to restrict testing," he said at a motorsport industry conference in Frankfurt. "If you look at the mileage we cover during a year, 80 percent of it is testing, 20 percent is practising and racing."

"You need a lot of engines to cover that amount of mileage and the engine is the most expensive part of the car, so restricting testing is a very good way to cut costs, and this is why we support it."

"We would certainly not be the first team to run out of money but it absolutely makes sense and it doesn't make sense to waste money. Covering 80 percent of the mileage at the test tracks means hiding the show from the spectators."

With reduced testing, Theissen said it might be possible for BMW to supply another team with engines, an idea the manufacturer has previously rejected. "It isn't our intention at the moment but from the capacity side it would become possible," he commented.

Although Ferrari maintains that it has no objection to having 19 races on the 2005 calendar, it seems the team is not yet ready to give in on the test reduction and is reportedly drawing up its own proposals in regard to cutting costs.
