Petronas organised a dream trip for the two 2002 Team Sauber Petronas drivers, to "celebrate an excellent season with a fourth place ranking". And also present to Malaysia the young Brazilian recruit for the 2002 Formula 1 Championship.
Neither Nick Heidfeld nor Felipe Massa lost any time when they got off the plane. Straight from his Malaysian Airlines plane from Zurich where he had left under the snow, Felipe Massa went straight to the sunny circuit where he made his first visit to learn the layout of the track for the 2002 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix.
Felipe Massa (and consequently Nick Heidfeld) drove the two Proton cars organised by Petronas around the track: GP 23 and GP 55 was to be read on the car plate! Drivers were alone in the car for the first two laps, and then were accompanied by selected media who had great fun driving with the two Champions.
The Sauber Petronas drivers attended a Petronas-organised event for the children of the employees of the Company. They signed masses of pictures and autographs. Then the drivers attended the first official press conference and official photo session in the nearby Petronas Tower. The day culminated with the first meeting of the drivers with Tan Sri Marican and Tan Sri Azizan and also the launch of the Petronas "Tech Tour Truck" gala evening.
Sunday was an early start to proceed to the Petronas Research Center in Bangi where the Sauber Petronas drivers went karting.
A selection of Petronas´ research Center young employees, all had stars in their eyes when they received a short but exciting driving lesson from Sauber Petronas Formula 1 drivers Nick Heidfeld and Felipe Massa on the factory racing kart circuit.
Both drivers were accompanied during the tour, by Team manager Beat Zehnder. They did three demonstration laps of the Go-Kart circuit and passed on some expert advice to the young Petronas karters.
After the go-kart session, Felipe and Nick went to one of the fashionable Cafes in the Mid-Valley Megamall shopping center: "All Star Sports Café".
An auction of parts of the 2000 car and drivers uniform raised no less than 35,000 RM. The Auction was also the focus of "one on one" interviews for selected media along with a photo session in the small but attractive café.
An on-going autograph-signing session by Felipe Massa and Nick Heidfeld was organised at the All Star Mid-Valley Megamall for visitors to the auction. They never stopped before the plane back to Europe same evening!
