Toro Rosso was thrilled that Scott Speed picked up the team's first ever championship point when he finished eighth in the Australian Grand Prix but it didn't last long. Speed was subsequently summoned to a stewards' hearing, along with Red Bull's David Coulthard.

Coulthard had complained after the race that Speed overtook him under yellow flag conditions after the accident of Speed's teammate Tonio Liuzzi. The stewards found this to be correct and Speed was given a 25 second penalty, which dropped him to 11th place.

Coulthard, who finished ninth, was therefore promoted to the eighth place and the one point. Speed was also fined for "using abusive language" towards an unnamed driver during the stewards' hearing. Whatever was said, quite possibly to Coulthard, cost Speed $5000.

"So… you've only had to wait until Race 3 of the season to see that Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso are serious about being rivals on the track, as the former has now benefited from the misfortune of the latter," said a joint statement from Red Bull and Toro Rosso.

"The Stewards of the Meeting summoned David Coulthard and Scott Speed to go through what happened after Tonio Liuzzi's accident on lap 38. They ruled that Scott overtook David under the yellow flags and penalised him by 25 seconds."
