Sunday, May 09, 2010: Indian Formula One driver Karun Chandhok's was forced to retire from the Spanish GP after putting on a brave display for the HRT F1 team at the Circuit de Catalunya. Chandhok was hit by Toro Rosso driver Jaime Alguersuari after he had just lapped the Indian driver. Damage to the right front suspension forced the Indian to stop on Lap 28. Jaime Alguersuari was handed a drive-through penalty tangle with the Indian driver.
Chandhok commented, "I am very disappointed with the outcome of the race. It's a real shame what happened with Jaime. I stayed out of his way, kept the car completely straight and he just turned left into me. I was really pleased with my race until then . I had a good first lap and was trying to be sensible with the option tyre and get them to last. My pace relative to the other new cars was good and I was pulling away from Di Grassi (Lucas) quite comfortably. In the end, although we changed the front wing, the damage to the front right suspension was too much and I had to stop. It is a disappointing end to a good day for the team."
Starting from last position, due to a five-place penalty for a gearbox change, Chandhok was upto 18th position after the first lap. From there on, Chandhok's pace was very consistent and for the first time this season the team was ahead of Lucas DiGrassi in the Virgin Racing. Chandhok even managed to pull away and was the last of all drivers to make his solitary pit stop. Chandhok moved out of the way to the left of the track to let Jaime Alguersuari lap him, when the Spanish driver hit the Indian star. Chandhok lost his front wing and headed straight in to the pits to change his wing. Unfortunately a lap later with too much damage to the right front suspension Chandhok parked his car in the team garage. Alguersuari was later given a penalty for causing the collision.
However, Chandhok will take heart as it was the first time this year that the HRT F1 team was ahead of their fellow newcomers, Virgin Racing. Chandhok will be looking to take this form into next week's race at Monaco, incidentally Chandhok favourite track.
