1999 SPANISH GRAND PRIX - FREE PRACTICE

With strong winds constantly gusting across the Circuit de Catalunya throughout today's track activities, the first practice sessions for the Spanish GP found many drivers and their engineers puzzling over the best setups to use. Most of them were still undecided when practice ended, which will give an additional element of importance to the Saturday morning session when the final choice of tyre - Medium or Soft - has to be made for qualifying and the race.

Yoshihiko Ichikawa, Bridgestone Motorsport Technical Manager: "Today the majority of the drivers used the Medium tyre and the problems reported to us included both oversteer and understeer. This seems to indicate that the track conditions, and especially the strong wind, were affecting the cars' handling from minute to minute. Now we have to hope that the weather tomorrow will be more stable."

Comments by an engineer from a team which used Soft tyres: "In the windy conditions, and with the track quite dirty today, it has been very difficult to draw any comparison between the two specifications of dry tyre. In fact it is still far from clear which type of tyre will be the right choice, and both our drivers have been struggling today. We have seen a few fast times, but they came only when the wind suddenly dropped. Tonight we will analyse the data and hope to understand the true situation."

Comments by an engineer from a team which used Medium tyres: "Our cars are generally lacking in grip, particularly at the front in the high-speed corners and at the rear in low-speed turns. So far, though, we are unable to say how much of this is due to the variable wind conditions and how much to the mechanical setup of the cars or the tyres themselves. The strange weather today must be partly responsible for this because we are not as fast as we were during the previous tests here."
