2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX Drama Wins Top Award

Heikki Kovalainen's Fiery Finish Wins 'LG Moment of the Year' at Autosport Awards

Singapore, 7 December 2010 -- The 2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX continues to set the standards for drama and action, with Heikki Kovalainen's spectacular fire at the finish of the race being voted the 'LG Moment of the Year' at the prestigious AUTOSPORT Awards in London.

With just one lap before the chequered flag was waved for race winner Fernando Alonso, fire erupted from the back of Kovalainen's Lotus which had been damaged in a late-race collision. The quick-thinking Finn made the decision not to steer his burning car into the crowded pit lane, parking his car instead on the start/finish straight and grabbing a fire extinguisher from over the pit wall to extinguish the blaze himself.

Kovalainen's 'Moment' was one of a number which marked a dramatic and incident-packed race.

Winner Alonso had to fight tooth and nail to keep the fast-starting Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull at bay to win by a margin of just 0.293 seconds.

Vettel's team-mate Mark Webber was involved in the most controversial moment of the thrilling race when he made contact with Lewis Hamilton at Turn 7. The McLaren driver's retirement ended any chance of the 2009 Singapore winner scoring a double.

The Autosport Awards have for a quarter of a century, been regarded as one of the sport's most prestigious and important events, particularly noteworthy because the decisions are based on the votes from readers around the world. This year, F1 fans were asked to vote for their favourite moment of the year.

Among the other moments nominated for the Award, was the dramatic collision between Red Bull team-mates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber in Turkey and Webber's spectacular crash at the European Grand Prix in Valencia.

Of course, the Singapore Grand Prix is no stranger to success at the Autosport Awards. In 2008, the inaugural race was awarded the Autosport Pioneering and Innovation Award, both for the revolutionary track lighting and the spectacular way in which it wove the track through the heart of the city. On that evening Colin Syn, Deputy Chairman of Singapore GP Limited, received the award from none other than Heikki Kovalainen.

"It is great to see Heikki receive the award this time" said Colin Syn. "But most importantly we are delighted that so many race fans clearly enjoyed the action and excitement that the Singapore Grand Prix continues to deliver. We are now hard at work to ensure that the 2011 event continues to thrill and builds on the success of its predecessors."
