Pit-stop practice and systems checks were the order of the day at Silverstone today. BAR completed a large number of pitstops while Jordan and Jaguar practiced refuelling. At the same-time Jaguar and Renault continued chassis development and shakedown runs. Arrows again suffered mechanical failures that severely reduced the amount of track-time available to them
Renault had a successful test and ran trouble-free all day. Jenson Button (chassis R202-01) joined team-mate Jarno Trulli (R202-02), who set the fastest time for the second day in a row, and both drivers shook down their cars and did systems checks. Jenson completed a race-style stint in the afternoon, running for about 30 laps, and Trulli also completed a 20 laps run, setting his fastest time on the very first lap before slowing down slightly.
Arrows continued their unfortunate test session and suffered even more technical problems. Yesterday morning Heinz-Harold Frentzen stopped early due to an engine failure, and today both Frentzen and Bernoldi stopped with gearbox failures just twenty minutes apart. Neither driver returned to the track during the day. Frentzen had completed a just handful of laps but was already lapping consistently in the low 1m 24s, ultimately setting the second fastest time of the day.
Jordan race drivers Takuma Sato and Giancarlo Fisichella were both present and combined short to medium runs with pitstop practice. Sato was pushing very hard on his laps - sliding the car several times - and managed a slow 360 spin at the exit of Luffield as the rain started to fall. Fisichella suffered a mechanical failure during the morning but was about to continue a short while later.
Jaguar continued to test their revised components and Pedro de la Rosa completed 38 laps. The team also did some refuelling practice. Eddie Irvine will test for the team on Wednesday.
BAR carried out pit-stop practise in the morning with Jacques Villeneuve at the wheel. As he pulled away from the first pitstop, Villeneuve saw smoke pouring out from the left-hand side of his car and dived away as quickly as possible. The fire was soon extinguished and the car returned to the track shortly afterwards. He continued to carry out a large number of pit-stops, followed by a 25-lap stint. In the afternoon Anthony Davidson shook down another chassis but failed to set a competitive time due to the wet conditions.
Renault are the fastest and most reliable team of the session so far -- their fastest laps and minimum number of technical problems suggest the team is ready for the season ahead. It is clear that the pre-season testing restrictions have had an effect on the reliability and performance of some teams while others have passed testing with flying colours.
