Formula One medical guru Professor Sid Watkins has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's birthday honours for his services to motor racing. Watkins, one of the premier neurosurgeons in the world, has acted as F1's Chief Medical Officer for many years.

He has promoted safety measures and was assigned Chairman of the FIA's Expert Advisory Safety Committee which covers all aspects of racing safety. Watkins is the chief of the F1 medical department and is on hand at every race to regulate emergency procedures if so needed.

Outside of F1 the professor is not idle, establishing the Brain and Spine Foundation in which research has led to breakthroughs in illnesses such as Parkinson's disease and cerebral palsy.

Watkins was first on the scene of the deaths of Roland Ratzenburger, Ayrton Senna and Gilles Villeneuve. Good friends he has lost and his book "Life At The Limit", is a fascinating insight into the world of Formula One safety.

Many and deserved congratulations to Prof. Watkins from Motorsport.com.
