Monza, 2001-10-21 - Shortly after arriving at the Monza track, Michael Schumacher spoke briefly to journalists at the team motorhome. "I am very happy to be here," was the German's first comment. "2001 was an extraordinary year and this party is the perfect end to it."

The first question was naturally about the previous evening at La Scala, where Schumacher was cheered to the roof by the audience. "I really enjoyed it," commented Michael. "Although I feel I might still be too young to really appreciate a performane like that." The man from Kerpen's most immediate plans revolve around his own town. "Next week, I will take part in the Karting World Championship which takes place in Kerpen. I raced in karts for 15 years and it is still very important to me. These days I am a bit out of the loop, so next week's race will be a real challenge, but I can't wait for it."

Of course, he had to make some comment on the season just gone. "It was a pretty tough championship and I lived through a period when my morale took a knock. But I had time to get back on form and now I am much less tired than I was towards the end of the season." Harder to predict is the future. "For now I am only thinking about going on holiday. As for next year, we will wait and see. What I can definitely say for now, I am sure we will have two rivals, two teams, one silver and one blue and white."

The final question concerned the MotoGP 500 race which took place this morning in Malaysia, with a win for Valentino Rossi. "I am a friend of Mike Doohan and I think Valentino Rossi is doing today what Doohan did in the past. He really is doing an exceptional job." Asked if he would like to throw a leg over a 500 machine, Michael replied with a smile: "Only in a straight line!"
