Monza, 17th July - Michael Schumacher has had an accident during Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro's first day of testing at the Monza circuit. The German driver's F2001 lost grip at the rear wheels under heavy braking for the Roggia corner and collided with the guard rail The car then slid along the barrier for the entire length of the escape road, before coming to rest against the tyre barrier at the end of the road.

Michael Schumacher is in good shape and a check-up at the circuit medical centre revealed no specific problems. The driver then joined his engineers to watch footage and study telemetry data to try and understand the cause of the accident. With his car damaged, Schumacher will not test any further and he will return home later today. Changes to Ferrari's Monza test schedule will be announced this evening.
