Team RED BULL SAUBER PETRONAS spent yesterday and today testing at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello with Felipe Massa, the 20 year-old Brazilian who currently leads the Italian F3000 Championship. In the course of the two days he covered 101 laps, or 530 kms, and set a best lap time of 1m 23.79s.
Willy Rampf (Technical Director): "Felipe had a steep learning curve to climb during this test. He began on Tuesday just acclimatising himself to the power, braking and cornering ability of a Formula One car, which is of course very different to the Formula 3000 cars he is used to driving in the F3000 Italian Championship. That day his best lap was 1m 26.23s.
"This morning we then began to experiment with different set-ups, so that he could understand the different effects they have on the car's behaviour and gain greater experience of chassis, aerodynamic and mechanical set-ups. Then this afternoon we set the car up specifically to suit his style of driving.
"It was a pleasure to work with him. He was very focused and we were pleased that he did not fall into the trap that is common with inexperienced drivers, of trying to run too long on each outing. His times came down very nicely, and given the conditions of the day he was able to lap faster than Michael Schumacher or Rubens Barrichello did at the test here in August. His confidence led us to ask him to contribute this afternoon to our preparation programme for next week's US GP at Indianapolis."
Felipe Massa: - "I am quite happy with this opportunity and the way I've been welcomed by the entire Team RED BULL SAUBER PETRONAS. I felt very at home, even though I had never met anyone in the Team! The car seemed to be a bit nervous on fresh tyres, but the engine power and the brakes are quite amazing. For sure, I have a lot to learn about FI and the C20, but I liked the speed I' ve been getting used to it. Even a painful neck during the early laps yesterday vanished as the session went on. Today I have improved on high speed corners and on the esses as well." <pre> Felipe Massa bio:
