Team RED BULL SAUBER PETRONAS began a three-day test at Nevers Magny-Cours in central France today, as part of its preparations for the forthcoming Italian and US Grands Prix at Monza and Indianapolis. Nick Heidfeld covered 47 laps today to set the fourth fastest time of 1m 15.60s, and will continue driving tomorrow before Kimi Räikkönen completes the test on Friday.

Remi Decorzent (Race engineer): "We have two important aims with this test. The first is to conduct on-track investigation of the cause of our transmission problem that dogged us at Spa, to complement similar work being carried out in rig tests back at Hinwil. Nick worked on that this morning." The second aspect is to test Bridgestone's tyre compounds and constructions for Monza next week, and Indianapolis a fortnight later."

Nick Heidfeld: "We were still honing the balance of the car as testing finished today, but we have done some solid running and are learning more about our transmission problem so that we can prevent a recurrence." <pre> Name Chassis Laptime Laps JP Montoya BMW Williams 1m 15.356s 45 J.Button Benetton Renault 1m 15.375s 45 M.Gene BMW Williams 1m 15.587s 74 N.Heidfeld SAUBER 1m15.607s 47 T.Enge Prost 1m 16.304s 62
