Ferrari one-two with Bridgestone
Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello scored the perfect result for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro and Bridgestone with a one-two finish in the San Marino Grand Prix. The team, whose Maranello factory is not far from the Imola circuit, dominated the weekend with Schumacher topping the time sheets on all three days. After the race Schumacher, who made history by becoming the first driver to win the San Marino Grand Prix for a fourth time, paid tribute to the Bridgestone tyres, which were developed especially for the Imola track. The result brought Barrichello his first points of the season and puts Ferrari back on the top of the constructors' championship. The next best Bridgestone runner was Jacques Villeneuve, who scored his best result of the season so far with a 7th place for Lucky Strike BAR Honda.
1st Michael Schumacher; 2nd Rubens Barrichello; 7th Jacques Villeneuve; 8th Felipe Massa; 10th Nick Heidfeld; DNF Enrique Bernoldi; Olivier Panis; Heinz-Harald Frentzen; Giancarlo Fisichella; Takuma Sato.
Ross Brawn - Technical Director - Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro
"Obviously a great race for the whole team. It's very pleasing to do well here especially since we did not do very well last year. The tyre was very, very good and Bridgestone proved that its products are more than a match for the competition. Although we reversed last year's result today, we now have to make sure we still win at circuits where we have been strong in the past. We have some tough competition so we have to ensure we work hard for the rest of the season."
Shigeo Watanabe - President, Chairman & CEO - Bridgestone Corporation
"A very good day for all our staff, both at Imola and in Japan. This is the first race I have attended this year and a one-two finish was the best result I could have hoped for. I was also pleased to hear Michael Schumacher's comments about his tyres after the race. Overall, I am very happy."
Hisao Suganuma - Technical Manager - Bridgestone Motorsport
"The perfect result as far as our collaboration with Ferrari goes but it was a shame our other teams could not exploit the good performance of our new tyres. From a tyre point of view I am happy because as well as being very competitive, we had no problems here with the consistency or wear. I am pleased for BAR and Jacques with their 7th place but it is a pity Sauber Petronas leave here empty handed after performing well this weekend."
