1st and 3rd for Ferrari & Bridgestone

Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello clinched a hard-fought result this afternoon for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro and Bridgestone after finishing first and third in the San Marino Grand Prix - the first European round of the season. Schumacher started from pole and despite a brief battle with his brother Ralf, the world champion converted yesterday's pole to his first win of the season. Barrichello, who started from third on the grid, never really got a clear run taking a well-earned third place finish.

Also making it into the top ten for Bridgestone was Lucky Strike B.A.R Honda's Jenson Button, who scores a point, and Sauber Petronas' Nick Heidfeld. After the first three flyaway races of the season, this afternoon's grand prix seemed a more realistic reflection of the effects of the new rules and regulations this year. Tyres, fuel and pitstop strategies came to the fore as the major factor today and a first and third for Bridgestone has boosted the tyre manufacturer's confidence for the remainder of the season.

Hiroshi Yasukawa - Director of Bridgestone Motorsport:

"On behalf of Bridgestone I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to Michael and Ralf Schumacher on their family bereavement. Under the circumstances, today's performance by both men and their respective teams was that of true professionals."

Hisao Suganuma - Technical Manager - Bridgestone Motorsport:

"I am extremely proud to see Michael take his win today, especially under the circumstances. And Rubens' performance was that of a dedicated sportsman - the passion and flair he showed battling for his podium place was just fantastic to watch. I believe this could well be the turning point in the championship for us. After the first three grands prix, we could really see today the true performance of the Bridgestone tyres. First, third and fastest lap is an excellent result and we will now continue our best efforts to maintain our winning ways."

Ross Brawn - Technical Director - Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro:

"Obviously the circumstances were very difficult this weekend but today's result has been a tremendous boost to the team and will give us renewed confidence. We knew there would be a window where our rival teams would struggle with their tyres and Rubens was able to take advantage of that. Our strategy was good, our car was good and our Bridgestone tyres were good - a huge boost for us."
