Scuderia Toro Rosso has elected to keep their two young drivers for next year’s FIA Formula One Championship season. Despite their rough season thus far, team principal Franz Tost claimed “Both drivers have done a good job this season.”
Jean-Éric Vergne is the rookie on the team this year while Daniel Riccardo had one season with the HRT team under his belt when he switched to the Ferrari cockpit of Scuderia Toro Rosso for the 2012 season. While there are still three grand prix events left this season, the team is already looking toward the future. Thus far Vergne has scored 12 points, while his teammate has nine points.
“I am really pumped to know that I am continuing with Scuderia Toro Rosso.
From Tost’s comments, it appears they are building for the future as both the Frenchman and the Australian are still in a learning curve. “Since the summer break, both drivers have scored more points and everyone in the team has been impressed with their maturity in terms of working with the engineers and their racecraft on track. We will be doing our best in the next few months to produce a 2013 car which will allow them to demonstrate their talent,” said Tost.
Both have had incidents with fingers pointed at them by the more experienced teams, and both have admitted their errors. “I am really happy about this great news. Thank you Toro Rosso and thank you Red Bull, who have backed me since the early days of my career. It has been a difficult season and, as a rookie, I have learned a lot, thanks to the support I got and the excellent relationship I have enjoyed with all the guys,” said Vergne.
Riccardo added, “I am really pumped to know that I am continuing with Scuderia Toro Rosso for another season and want to thank the team and Red Bull. There are big expectations for next year and I’m ready and willing to fulfill them.”
Scuderia Toro Rossi will conclude the season in Sao Paulo, Brazil on November 25th. This weekend the two racers are preparing for the challenge on the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. In a few weeks, they and the team will be on the same par as the other Formula One drivers who will also contest the new venue in Austin, Texas (USA).
“We have had quite a tough season, but despite that, I have always enjoyed a good relationship with all the guys and I am delighted at the idea of working with them for another year,” said the Australian.
Frenchman Vergne agreed: “I feel much stronger now and I know I have become a better driver over the course of the season. I really believe in this team and with all the experience I have gained, combined with the team’s ambitious plans for next year; I think we can look forward to great things in 2013, attacking all the way.”
