Renault F1 Team engineering director has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Oxford Brookes University.

Renault F1 Team Executive Director of Engineering director, Pat Symonds, holds a key position. He liaises between the design office and the on-track activities, working closely with Mike Gascoyne and Bob Bell, both at the factory and at all the circuits around the world. "Nowadays, modern F1 teams employ so many engineers that a sole person cannot possibly control all aspects of engineering," he explains, "That is the reason why my job was created."

Pat's time is mostly taken up by the cars' activities during races and test sessions. "Furthermore, I am involved with other technical areas such as development of driver aids and electronics," he says. With his time split between the Oxfordshire factory and the circuit, Pat has to wear several hats.

"To sum-up, I intervene as soon as one of our cars goes out on track," he continues. "This doesn't mean I am left with nothing to do once back at the factory: set-up preparation, meaning initial settings of the R23, are also part of my responsibilities. And then there's planning for the future." Set-ups and pit-stop simulations, monitoring the development of traction control and launch control: there is always a lot to do!

During a Grand Prix, Pat centralises the data collected by Fernando and Jarno's cars. He then conducts a thorough analysis in order to establish the best options. He manages the race weekend programme and also fine-tunes the qualifying and race strategies. Finally, from time to time, he manages to get his breath...

His engineering talents and his influence on engineering apprenticeship in Great Britain have been honoured recently as he received an honorary doctorate from Oxford Brookes University.
