The top eight from this morning's practice session are supplied by the French tyre manufacturer Michelin. Amongst them, Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso are seventh and eighth. But rain is threatening for qualifying...

This morning's session passed without incident, on a dry track, in air temperatures of around 20°C, with the track at 22°C. At the end of the second 45-minute session, with the FIA having now decided to take lap times from the second session only rather than cumulatively, the Williams of Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya were quickest, ahead of Olivier Panis and the two McLarens, with Coulthard leading Kimi Raikkonen.

The Renault F1 Team's cars finished in seventh and eighth, with Jarno ahead of Fernando. "The car's balance is better than yesterday, but it's still not perfect," said the Italian. "It's difficult to get the tyres working correctly."

"Having said that, we have found a solution that seems to work. The weather forecast says it might rain in qualifying, so it could be an interesting session. We will be tweaking the set-up between now and the warm-up."

Executive Director of Engineering Pat Symonds continues the explanation: "We are better than yesterday, but still not as competitive as I would have liked at this type of circuit," he admitted. "However, our times on longer runs are very consistent, and that will be an advantage for the race."
