Michael Schumacher believes brother Ralf is capable of winning the championship but he would like to secure his own seventh title before his younger sibling takes the honours. Ralf was in the running this season until forced to miss the Italian Grand Prix due to a testing crash, then his hopes were dashed. Michael would be happy to see Ralf take the title, but not as happy as he would be to win it himself.

"I wouldn't have any problem with Ralf becoming world champion one day," said Michael. "But before that I would like to win another title, my seventh. This is my main goal."

"I would be very happy to win the title in 2004 but if I don't, I will try to do a little better the following year. I wouldn't mind if Ralf wins the championship next year, indeed, I would be delighted if he would succeed in doing so. I know that he's got what it needs to win the world championship. There's no doubt about that."

Michael renewed his contract with Ferrari this summer to take him through the 2006 season. Ralf has yet to confirm a deal with Williams for next season but is already contracted to the team for 2004. Speculation continues that Michael may retire before the end of his contract but so far Schumacher Senior says he has no intention of calling it a day just yet.
