Richards confirmed at Benetton
Just weeks after announcing Flavio Briatore's departure with the Benetton outfit after this season, the team con- firmed today that Prodrive rallying boss David Richards would replace the Italian.
Richards had been rumored for some time to be coming to the team, but only today it was made official.
He has lead the Subaru rallying team to several champ- ionships, and will continue to fufill his duties there while heading up Benetton's operation.
Villeneuve not going anywhere
Frank Williams confirmed today that recent rumors regarding Jacques Villeneuve moving to Prost for 1998 were totally false.
It has been said in the last few days that Williams and Technical Director Patrick Head were in a feud with the Canadian driver, and that he would no longer be with the team after this season -- regardless of his result in the championship.
Williams will indeed retain Villeneuve, along with Heinz- Harald Frentzen as their lineup next year.
Alain Prost confirmed again today that Olivier Panis will return to action at this weekend's Grand Prix of Luxembourg.
He had made this announcement a week and a half ago, but many questioned whether Panis would actually drive this soon. With his legs back to full strength and his spirit at 110%, Panis is go for tomorrow.
He replaces Italian Jarno Trulli, who was very impressive in his three-month stint with the French team. Prost will take up their option on him for next year, for him to partner Panis. ________________________________________________ Copyright 1997 by John E. Klender. All rights reserved.
