To add insult to the injury of a ignominious 2000 season, Prost F1 will be losing its marquee sponsor, Gauloises Blondes, for 2001. Gauloises, which has sponsored Prost since 1997, contributed over US$20M to the team's operation this year.

While the team will gain Ferrari customer engines next year, it now has the additional task of finding sufficient sponsorship to enable it to take advantage of the additional power of those engines.

"The end of [the Gauloises] sponsorship is not at all a surprise," said Alain Prost. "I have been prepared for it a long time. Throughout our partnership, the [Gauloises] management has always been extremely correct by keeping me constantly abreast of their strategy."

Prost has been struggling with underpowered and unreliable Peugeot powerplants this year, and has yet to score a championship point in the fourteen races contested so far this season.
