Ferrari team principal Jean Todt, who stood in for Michael Schumacher at the post-race press conference, was full of praise for the German, who won today's San Marino Grand Prix under very difficult circumstances. Michael and brother Ralf decided to compete in the race despite the death of their mother early this morning.

"I think it was very important," said Todt of Michael's decision to race. "He decided together with his brother yesterday to go to Germany and definitely he felt in a way more comfortable having been there."

"It was very difficult for Michael today, but he did his job and to do it like that was just fantastic," said Todt. "I think the way he drove today shows just what he is as a man and that was very important."

Michael was evidently upset on parc ferme, taking his time getting out of the Ferrari, but in the race he showed nothing but skill and determination. Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn also praised Michael's performance.

"We said it was his decision and what ever he decided we told him we would support him," he said. "He has given us a tremendous boost in very difficult circumstances. What he did today was exemplary. The timing of the win was crucial after we had such a difficult start to the season."

Mercedes motorsport director Norbert Haug offered his sympathies to Michael and Ralf: "I feel terribly sorry for the Schumacher brothers," he said. "But they showed everyone their greatness today when, of all people, those two had such a great fight at the start. They're great boys."
