Post-race penalty drops Vergne to tenth in USGP

Jean-Eric Vergne has been penalized for contact late in the USGP.

Late in the United States Grand Prix, Jean-Eric Vergne attempted an aggressive move on Romain Grosjean, as they battled just inside the top ten.

He ended up colliding with the Lotus, damaging the front wing on Grosjean's car. Grosjean fell outside the points as a result. However, Vergne went on to finish ninth for Toro Rosso. Upon further review, the stewards decided to hand Vergne a five-second penalty, dropping him down to the tenth.

The beneficiary of this penalty is Pastor Maldonado, who moved up to ninth in the official results table. A frustrated Grosjean claimed that he could have finished as high as P8, had it not been for the contact.

For Maldonado, this is his best showing since 2012, in this same race when he was with Williams.
