Another Two Car Finish for Nokia Tyrrell Yamaha
Mika Salo and Ukyo Katayama drove a strong race in today's Pacific Grand Prix and brought both Tyrrell Yamahas to the chequered flag, finishing in 12th and 13th positions.
Both drivers stopped twice for fuel and tyres, on laps 25 and 52 for Mika and 23 and 54 for Ukyo, and had a trouble-free race.
Mika Salo: "I made a good start and gained two positions on the first lap. Then I was able to push the car hard on the next few laps. But I was very close all the time with the other drivers and couldn't make any mistakes. The balance of the car was much better today and the engine felt good but I had too much wheel spin out of slow corners and I couldn't get on the throttle early enough. Physically I was fine on this demanding circuit despite injuring my left wrist during the warm-up this morning when I drove a bit too hard over a kerb."
Ukyo Katayama: "Today was a good warm-up before Suzuka next Sunday. It was good to race again after missing the last two Grand Prix and I am delighted to have finished the race. I had no problems physically. The car was better today but still had too much wheel spin out of corners and a bit of oversteer."
Mike Gascoyne, Deputy Technical Director: " We are pleased that after a difficult weekend wee made steady progress with the car today. Both Mika and Ukyo drove a strong race. We are particularly pleased for Ukyo who drove very well in his first race after his accident at the start of the Portuguese Grand Prix. We hope we can build on the progress we made today and put on a strong performance in Suzuka."
Yoshiaki Takeda, Yamaha F1 Project Manager: "I am happy to see both of our drivers finish here at Aida under tremendous pressure. This gives us some hope that we can boost ourselves and be more competitive at Suzuka. All of the mechanics, engineers and drivers did a good job and we should approach Suzuka in a positive manner."
