Nick Heidfeld, the 23-year-old German Formula One promise, has decided to abandon the Prost team after a disastrous 2000 season, and is moving to Sauber for 2001.

With Mika Salo having left Sauber for Toyota, and Pedro Paulo Diniz also expected to be on his way out of the team, the Swiss team was left with no definite drivers for the next season.

"I believe that the team has the potential to make further progress," said Heidfeld. "I will give my best to make a significant contribution."

Heidfeld's contract with Sauber, who also has an agreement with Ferrari to run the previous generation of its engines, covers the years 2001 through 2003.

"We now have the chance to build a long term relationship with a young driver," said Peter Sauber. "Nick Heidfeld has shown so much potential in his career that we would have liked to sign him a year ago and are now happy with this three-year contract."
