Although McLaren previously said that it had no plans for an official presentation of the new MP4-23, it now appears that the 2008 challenger will be unveiled in Stuttgart on January 7th. The launch will reportedly take place at the Mercedes Benz museum and the car is expected make its track debut at Jerez the next day.

McLaren announced earlier this month that Heikki Kovalainen will be teammate to Lewis Hamilton next season. Kovalainen, who raced for Renault in 2007, said it was an 'honour' to follow in the footsteps of other McLaren Finnish drivers Mika Hakkinen and Kimi Raikkonen.

McLaren came so close to the drivers' title in '07, with Hamilton and Fernando Alonso just one point behind Ferrari's Raikkonen at the end. It was a fraught season for the Woking squad, with in-team tensions and the exclusion from the constructors' championship as a punishment for being on possession of confidential Ferrari data.

The launch of the new McLaren will take place just one day after rivals Ferrari debut their 2008 car at Fiorano. According to the German media Raikkonen will be the first to drive it, although Ferrari has not confirmed if that is correct.

Launch dates so far:

Ferrari - January 6th, Fiorano
McLaren - January 7th, Stuttgart
Toyota - January 10th, Cologne
BMW Sauber - January 14th, Munich
Red Bull - January 16th, Jerez
Honda - January 29th, Brackley, UK
Renault - January 31st, Paris
