Cosworth Racing has opened a new multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art dynamometer facility in Northampton, England. The facility comprises three transient dyno cells, which have been custom built by the engine company, and will be used predominantly for its F1 program and as a boost to its engine development capabilities.

The new facility frees Cosworth from reliance on Ford's dynos in Detroit for advanced transient testing as Cosworth Commercial Director, Bernard Fergusson, explained: "For the past few years, we used Ford's facilities in Detroit. Having our own facility will improve our response time and get improvements to the track quicker."

Cosworth Managing Director Nick Hayes echoed Fergusson’s views that the in-house facility represents a big step forward.

“Until these dyno facilities became available, Cosworth was really trailing the capabilities of our leading competition in the very important area of transient testing,” said Hayes. “We now have access to facilities that allow us to get closer to the conditions seen in the car.

”The end result will be better transient behaviour of the engine in the car and finer resolution of small changes with high levels of confidence of the results. In short, this facility gives us a big step forward for Cosworth Racing's F1 engine development capabilities.”
