Juan Pablo Montoya wasted no time in showing what the new Williams FW26 was capable of as he topped the first day of 2004 testing at Jerez. Montoya completed 46 laps and with a time of 1:16.630 was over a second clear of second placed Toyota test driver Ricardo Zonta.

Williams also had test driver Marc Gen? on duty, in an FW25 chassis with 2004 engine and gearbox, and the Spaniard was third quickest testing tyres. "We had a small gearbox problem with Juan Pablo's car. It's only the start of a long preparation process prior to Melbourne, but it wasn't a bad first day," Williams technical director Patrick Head told Autosport.

"We decided to push the car early because that's what we didn't do last year, and we thought we'd try something different. We're basically going through the systems on the car and checking the response of the drivers. It is a big encouragement to the guys back in the factory who worked on the car. It's still early days yet, and because of the problems we've done very little today, but we'll see."

Zonta and teammate Olivier Panis, who rounded off the times in eighth, both drove an interim version of the TF103. Renault had Jarno Trulli and test driver Franck Montagny present, Trulli fourth fastest and Montagny fifth. Both ran interim cars with parts of the R24 incorporated, Montagny working on suspension and Trulli on brakes.

Felipe Massa continued his Ferrari test driving duties and was sixth, ahead of fellow tester Luca Badoer. Both drivers worked on electronics and tyre testing using three different F2003-GA chassis.
