Franck Montagny: "An unforgettable experience"

The Frenchman took the wheel of the R23 yesterday morning for the first time as part of a Grand Prix weekend. It proved a baptism of fire for Franck but, nevertheless, a wholly positive experience.

"I have only done 150 laps in an F1 car in my entire career...and at least twenty of them were yesterday!" smiles the Frenchman. "Of course, I would have liked to do a bit more running, and our planned programme was for fifty laps. The rain and an engine failure disrupted our programme, but I can't complain. Achieving what I did yesterday is a good first step."

Franck has been smiling ever since. "Getting behind the wheel of the R23 was an unforgettable experience," he said. "The team's organisation during this session is exceptional. They are very demanding in terms of technical feedback, and you have to be very precise. Given the conditions, I think I did a good job. Even so, I didn't feel any pressure. I slept well the night before, and I knew things would go well if I pushed myself to my maximum. I gradually built up my speed on each run, with one key thing in mind: don't go off!"

Executive Director of Engineering Pat Symonds was extremely pleased with Franck's work yesterday. "The weather conditions and some technical worries disrupted Franck's session, but he reacted extremely professionally. Furthermore, given this was his first time at the wheel of an R23, his lap times were very competitive."
