Although an official signing of contracts has yet to take place, Minardi have reportedly taken on Russian Sergei Zlobin as test driver for 2003. Zlobin tested with the team earlier this year after Minardi and Russian gas company Gazprom went into partnership. The 32-year-old competed in the Euro 3000 series but has yet to be granted an FIA superlicense to compete in the top levels of racing.

Minardi managing director Gian Carlo Minardi told a press conference in Moscow: "We will work closely with Sergei so that, one day, he could drive a Formula One car for us. I will be more specific about his future in Formula One racing after we have a few tests in Valencia later this month."

The team has yet to announce race drivers for 2003 but news is expected soon: "That too should be decided in the near future," Minardi said. Team principal Paul Stoddart has ex-Arrows driver Jos Verstappen on his wish list for next year but the Dutchman is hedging his bets until Minardi secure an engine deal. The Faenza squad is thought to be close to an agreement with Cosworth but nothing has been confirmed.
