Prior to the official announcement from the Mercedes team and their new 2013 driver Lewis Hamilton, the Briton’s soon to be former team one-ups him. Seems in the FIA Formula One Championship, the race is both on and off the track.
Vodafone McLaren Mercedes signed the hot-shoe from Mexico, Sergio Perez, to a multi-year contract, starting in 2013. “I’m thrilled and delighted to have become a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver. The McLaren name is one of the greatest in the history of Formula 1,” he said.
I'm under no illusion that it is indeed a very big step.
Perez has proven his ability to be a front runner with his current ride for the Sauber F1 Team, landing on the podium and nearly winning his first race this season. Perez has shown his maturity, along with his speed.
He said, “I've spent the 2012 season working very hard to demonstrate my potential, but I've always remained humble and focused. I am, and always will be, extremely grateful to Peter [Sauber] and everybody at the Sauber Formula 1 team for their belief in me, and for giving me the chance to race in Formula 1.”
Perez has a world champion teammate for 2013. Jenson Button took his Formula One title in 2009 – one year after his soon to be former teammate, Hamilton, earned his gold medal.
Perez commented, “I'm under no illusion that it is indeed a very big step – as it would be for any driver – but I'm ready for it. So, while I'm still fully focused on doing my best for Sauber for the remainder of this season, I'm already massively looking forward to working with everyone at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, and with Jenson, who's someone I’ve long admired as a brilliant driver and a great champion.”
