SAN MARINO GRAND PRIX 1998 - RACE DAY Chassis Numbers: David Coulthard: MP4 - 13 03 Mika Hakkinen: MP4 - 13 04 T. Car: MP4 - 13 02 The West McLaren Mercedes team were delighted to see David Coulthard win the San Marino Grand Prix from a hard won pole position. Mika Hakkinen's gear box failure means that there are only three points between the two team mates and some very exciting races are in prospect. DAVID COULTHARD `I am very happy to achieve victory here from my pole position and I would like to thank all the team and my mechanics for their efforts. After the second pit stop I knew we had a big enough gap to Michael so I tried to look after the car. I didn't want know at the time why Mika went out of the race because I didn't want to worry about anything but it is a shame that he wasn't able to score some more points towards the constructors' championship.' MIKA HAKKINEN `I was in a comfortable second place feeling no pressure from Michael and content to hold the 2- 3 second gap to David. Then I had gearbox failure of which I had very little warning. Obviously I am pleased that David won the race which prevents Michael from achieving an extra four possible points. There is now a very interesting situation between David and myself and I think he is looking forward to the remaining races as much as I am.' RON DENNIS `The race was a little more stressful than we would have liked. A great drive from David who followed the instructions from the pitwall precisely. Some circuit debris on the oil cooler increased its operating temperature outside the normal range and we used David's performance advantage to enhance the cars reliability. Mika suffered a gearbox failure which was probably not related to excess temperature but we will not know until we disassemble the gearbox and inspect it.' NORBERT HAUG `I am sorry for Mika who couldn't score valuable points because of his gearbox problem. David did a mature job of pushing hard in the beginning and bringing home the car in the end. Being on pole and winning the race is a great achievement.' _________________________________________________________________ SAN MARINO GRAND PRIX - QUALIFYING Chassis Numbers: David Coulthard: MP4 - 13 03 Mika Hakkinen: MP4 - 13 04 T. Car: MP4 - 13 02 David Coulthard just pipped his team mate Mika Hakkinen to pole position for the San Marino Grand Prix by only one tenth, making it David's second pole in succession and the fourth for the West McLaren Mercedes Team this year. DAVID COULTHARD `It's great to be on pole especially as towards the end of the session I thought I might loose it. I was suffering from some imbalance and understeer with the car, which these conditions can create. I knew Mika had improved, so it was always going to be tight, but It is a good feeling to go out and improve the time and react to the pressure of qualifying.' MIKA HAKKINEN `Naturally I am disappointed not to be on pole, because it is always an advantage to occupy the best position on the grid. Part of the reason is that I had a problem in the last section where my tyres didn't work to perfection, which cost me a few tenths. The high temperatures will make it an interesting race in terms of tyre wear.' RON DENNIS `We are obviously delighted to be occupying the front row for tomorrow's race and both drivers did an excellent job. It's all very close however, we have a good setup for the race and so we are quite looking forward to tomorrow.'. NORBERT HAUG `To be on pole in Italy is a fantastic result. Our team work so far this season is excellent, as David and Mika have proved, by achieving two poles respectively in the last four races.' _________________________________________________________________ SAN MARINO GRAND PRIX 1998 - FRIDAY Chassis Numbers: David Coulthard: MP4 - 13 03 Mika Hakkinen: MP4 - 13 04 T. Car: MP4 - 13 02 The West McLaren Mercedes team focused on race setup for both practice sessions with Mika Hakkinen posting the fastest time of the day with a 1:27.617 lap, closely followed by David Coulthard just three tenths behind him on a fastest lap of 1:27.940. MIKA HAKKINEN `We did some good work in both sessions to improve the chassis and develop my performance, but I also had some trouble with traffic and the number of yellow flags naturally slowed me up. I had an incident at the fifth corner, where I went wide and caused some damage to the car. Fortunately the mechanics fixed the car very quickly and I was able to finish the session.' DAVID COULTHARD `We worked through our normal Friday programme. Drivability is an issue on this track and also we struggled a little bit with the balance on the entry into the corners. Unfortunately I had a small engine problem which meant I couldn't finish the end of the session and missed out on the chance to check the car on new tyres, but tomorrow is another day.' RON DENNIS `It has been a productive day but our progress was hampered in the latter part of practice by a small engine problem on David's car and a slight imbalance which developed on Mika's car. Both problems are of no real significance but they are reflected in our ultimate lap times. NORBERT HAUG `Quite a productive day, really. We worked to find a good setup for the race. David's engine suffered a leak in the pneumatic system which cut his practice short in the last ten minutes. We should be in good shape for qualifying and the race.'
