Vodafone McLaren Mercedes have confirmed that fuel supplier Mobil 1 was the main mover behind the promotional event that will see former Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton and double NASCAR-CUP champion Tony Stewart swap cars later this year.
While there is no confirmed date for the run that will see Hamilton take the wheel of Stewart's Chevrolet Impala while Stewart - the 1997 IRL IndyCar champion prior to switching to NASCAR in 1998 - will make his Formula 1 debut with McLaren.
The intended swap echoes the exchange witnessed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2003 when then-Williams F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya swapped machines with four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon.
A McLaren spokesman confirmed: "Putting Lewis Hamilton and Tony Stewart on the track together later this year - and having them switch cars for a first time - is something Mobil 1 has been considering as a great way to highlight Mobil 1's relationships in the world of motorsports.
"A lot of planning goes into an event of this nature and we are working closely with the Mobil 1 team. When we are able to confirm details, we will share additional information."
