Maldonado hit with three penalty points

Lotus driver Pastor Maldonado was handed three penalty points for his safety car incident during the Malaysian Grand Prix.

The penalty means the Venezuelan has eight penalty points in total for the 12-month period.

A driver who earns 12 penalty points during a 12-month period will be banned for one race.

Maldonado was given a 10-second time penalty for failing to stay above the minimum time set by the FIA ECU when following the safety car early in the race.

Force India drivers Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg were also awarded two penalty points for their clashes with Romain Grosjean and Daniil Kvyat.

Perez has three penalty points in total, while it was the first offence for Hulkenberg.
