Mercedes technical director Paddy Lowe hopes that his team won’t be forced into changing Lewis Hamilton’s engine after he hit trouble in free practice one.
Hamilton was told to stop his car at Turn 5 on his first flying lap at Sepang, and reported he had heard "a click from the rear".
"There's a hardware problem we need to fix," Lowe told Sky Sports. "We don't know exactly what we're going to do next. We need to do some investigations."
When asked if they would be forced to change the engine, Lowe replied: "We're hoping not."
Lowe admitted that the problem had put Hamilton's side of the garage behind Nico Rosberg, who was fastest in the session.
"Yeah, of course, it always puts you on the back foot for Saturday if you haven't done your homework on Friday," he said.
