The garage was possibly the best place to be today. The rain failed to abate and turned the second day of running into a tyre test for the five teams attending. Alex Wurz was fastest, with wet weather specialist, Jean Alesi, second on the timesheets. Jaguar Racing's Eddie Irvine posted the third quickest time in the blustery conditions, only two tenths off Alesi.
Pedro de la Rosa stuck with his Michelin tyre programme, while waiting for the weather to lift. The Spaniard spoke to jaguar-racing.com and expressed understandable frustration with the English weather, but there was a discernable spring in his step all the same.
There were three incidents - BAR's Olivier Panis went off once, and then stopped out on the track with an undisclosed problem, while Mark Webber had an off in his Benetton. Arrows attended but the garage remained firmly closed, the team is expected to make an appearance on the final day tomorrow.
McLaren's David Coulthard went through an electronics programme, a lap at a time, and as a result set no lap time. Jenson Button continued with the lion's share of the Benetton programme, more time in the car prescribed for the young Englishman.
F3000 champion Justin Wilson was pleased with his debut in an F1 car, setting the fourth fastest time after a lengthy session, possibly not as much of a feat as fitting the six foot something driver into one! "It is a very steep learning curve for me," he told itv-f1.com. "The seat was made for me, and leg room is okay, as is the padding inside the cockpit. It was lots of fun and acceleration is so much better than anything else. Even in the wet, braking had so much grip." <pre> Times from Day Two Wurz (McLaren) 1m33.520s (61 laps) 2. J.
