It may not be everyone's idea of a good result, but Eddie Irvine thinks his ninth place finish in the Driver's championship last year was his biggest achievement as an F1 driver. Irvine, who was second over all in 1999 when driving for Ferrari, believes the Jaguar R3 was the worst car last year and his efforts to be ninth were something to be proud of.

"I think to finish the world championship in ninth position with the worst car in the field, which is what I did last year, was the biggest achievement of my career," he told Auto Express. "I don't think I could have done more. When Niki Lauda said I was demanding, I took that as praise. Most people would have given up when faced with that situation, but I kept pushing."

Jaguar has struggled for results in its three years in F1, the best being Irvine's third place podium at Monza in 2002, but despite the troubled time he had, Irvine thinks he made the right decision in joining the team.

"I think I made the right calls but they turned out wrongly," he said. "In hindsight, it's easy to say I should have gone to Williams in 1999 or McLaren for 2000 but they weren't the right moves at that time. Switching to Jaguar was the correct thing to do."

Irvine was dropped by Jaguar at the end of last season and was in the running for a race seat with Jordan for this year. However, that opportunity fell through and the Irishman announced he would not be racing in F1 in 2003. Where Irvine's future lies is unknown but many were sad to see the departure of one of the sport's great characters.
