Damon Hill qualified third at the Hungaroring this morning, just 3 tenths behind pole qualifier Michael Schumacher. Jacques Villeneuve was second, a little less than 2 tenths behind Schumacher, after an off which caused only minor damage but aborted his second attempt.

Hill was seventh for much of the session before setting his stunning time right at the end.

Mika Hakkinen was second until the closing moments when he slipped to fourth as Hill and Villeneuve set their final times. Hill's run pushed Eddie Irvine back to 5th and Frenzen to 6th.

A spin ended Gerhard Berger's final attempt with his primary car, and David Coultard spun as well in the closing moments.
