The team has said that both Heidfeld and rival Antonio Pizzonia will be retained for 2005 and a decision on who will race alongside Mark Webber will be made after further tests. Webber himself was also on track and was second fastest, a few hundredths behind Heidfeld.

BAR was the other team at work and had its pair of test drivers behind the wheel. Anthony Davidson was third on the time sheet and Enrique Bernoldi was fourth, working on new engine components and aerodynamics.

A Vallelunga in Italy, Luca Badoer kicked off Ferrari's New Year schedule with a best time of 58.454 over 80 laps. The Italian worked on tyre development and electronic solutions and will continue at the circuit tomorrow.
