Williams' technical director Patrick Head was not surprised by the result of the Spanish Grand Prix as he said the team expected to be behind Ferrari. Michael Schumacher romped home to an easy victory half a minute ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya but Head believes Williams will be closer to the Maranello team in the next few races. Williams are seven points behind Ferrari in the Constructors' standings and Montoya twenty one points behind Schumacher in the Driver's championship.

"We will be a lot closer at the next race in Austria, but we are going to have to improve a lot very quickly in order to get back into a competitive position,' said Head. "We expected to be some way behind in Spain so we are not too surprised." He added that overall improvements were needed to be consistent: "There is obviously a deficiency in the complete package and we have to make sure we improve it because we don't want to be quick at some tracks and slow at others."

BMW motorsport director Gerhard Berger was not quite so optimistic as Head, saying the gap between Williams and Ferrari in Barcelona was alarming. He also dismissed any chances of winning the Driver's title this season and said there was no real chance of winning the Constructors'.

"Forget the drivers' championship. There's just no chance," said Berger. "I think we have an outside chance in the constructors' championship, but not a real chance. Thanks to Juan Pablo's second place we are now just seven points behind Ferrari, which gives us confidence to continue the fight. But the gap we have to Ferrari on this track alarms us."
